From 1 January to 30 June 2019, Romania will hold the six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This will be the country’s first time doing so since its accession to the EU in 2007. With Brexit set to happen in March and European elections scheduled for the end of May, the country will be responsible for launching a new phase of the European project. During its mandate, Romania will prioritise cohesion and the reduction of disparities, strengthening the protection of the European borders, whilst also promoting EU common values and principles. In this spirit, Romania has chosen the motto “Cohesion, a common European value” – reflecting the need for Members States to work more closely together to advance and consolidate the European project.
We hope our Romanian Presidency Guide proves helpful in guiding your advocacy for the next six months.
